Mexico 8 Reales (Fakes are possible) 1823 to 1897

These are old 8 reales coin from the Republic of Mexico. They are fascinating collectible coins. Be sure your coin is genuine. Check our discussion of fakes below.

These coins contain 0.786 troy ounces of silver. So that sets the minimum value they can attain. For instance, if silver is selling at $18 per troy ounce (look it up for today's price at kitco.com), the minimum price is 0.786 x 18 = $14. This is called the base value, or bullion value, BV of the coin. It is the value of the coin due to silver content alone.

Coins with the liberty cap and starburst pattern were minted in smaller denominations than 8 reales. In fact, denominations of 1/2, 1, 2, and 4 reales look the same, only smaller. The denomination appears explicitly on the coin in the place where '8R' appears on the 8 reales. Look for '1/2R', '1R', '2R', or '4R' on your coin and, if you have one, click to this appraisal page.

There is an elaborate system of mints and mint marks for these coins. Identifying each element of the mint system is beyond the scope of this CoinQuest forum. If you are interested, get a good coin catalog which brings all the details to light. Go to your library. You will have to be a careful detective to figure out exactly what you've got.

The general progression of catalog values for most dates of the 8 reales goes like this:

8 REALES BEFORE 1857 (most, but not all, dates and mints)
worn: BV + $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: BV + $40
well preserved: BV + $150
fully uncirculated: BV + $250

8 REALES AFTER 1856 (most, but not all, dates and mints)
worn: BV + $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: BV + $20
well preserved: BV + $40
fully uncirculated: BV + $120

but, these old 8 reales from Mexico have a long history. The further back you go, the more valuable they get. There are several variations of this coin and some of them can be quite valuable, cataloging for hundreds of US dollars even in worn condition. Coins worth $150 or more in worn condition are shown in the list below. Some of these are quite valuable, tipping the scales over $1000 when in uncirculated condition. Worn coins do not reach this high. Check your coin against this list. If you have one of these, investigate further -- it's a good one!

There may be more valuable dates out there: trying to list them all here is beyond our means. If you have a coin with good eye appeal that is not listed above, pursue it further because it might be valuable due to good eye appeal. As with all valuable coins, you must be careful of counterfeits. This coins, and other silver coins of the era, were counterfeited in bronze and then plated with silver. Below you can see a picture of a genuine coin and a bronze fake. The fake is about 6 grams lighter than the real coin, so weight is a good way to distinguish them.


There is a growing group of collectors who specialize in counterfeit coins. That means old and interesting fakes carry some collector value. The 'black cabinet' market, as it is called, is not cataloged or tracked, but CoinQuest's best estimate of value runs like this:
