Medal US American Arts Commemorative Gold 1980 to 1984

American Arts Commemorative Series medallions are a series of ten gold bullion medallions that were produced by the United States Mint from 1980 to 1984.

The US Treasury began selling portions of the national stockpile of gold, and President Jimmy Carter signed the authorizing legislation in 1978, despite objections from Treasury officials.

Read the entire history and summary of the medals on Wikipedia.

These medallions were issued in two sizes: one troy ounce gold, and one-half troy ounce gold. The gold alloy contains copper for strength. They are worth their weight in gold.

To find the value, first determine the current price of gold at web sites such as kitco.com, then multiply by 1 or 1/2 depending on the size of your medal. This gives the base value, or BV, of the medal. For instance, if gold is selling at $1200 US dollars per troy ounce, and you had a 1/2 ounce piece, the BV is 0.5 x 1200 = $600 US dollars.

Most of the medals you see today are circulated to some extent. However, some medals have been carefully maintained over the years in pristine, fully uncirculated condition. The medal in our picture has be so preserved, as you can tell from its frosty, lustrous appearance. For fully uncirculated pieces, the price goes a little higher:

ONE OUNCE MEDALS
circulated or almost uncirculated: BV
fully uncirculated: BV + $150 US dollars

HALF OUNCE MEDALS
circulated or almost uncirculated: BV
fully uncirculated: BV + $100 US dollars

All dates carry the same value. Later date medals may move a smidgen higher in price (a few dollars) because the mintage is less than early date medals.
