Brazil 50 Reis, 100 Reis and 200 Reis 1871 to 1889
Brazil 50 Reis, 100 Reis and 200 Reis 1871 to 1889

Most Brazilian 50, 100 reis and 200 reis coins catalog for only a few US dollars. There are a few special dates in both series (see below). Coins in fully uncirculated condition can reach $50 to $100 in catalog value.

The 200 reis coin looks the same as the 100 reis coin except, of course, for the big 100. The 200 is a tad bigger than the 100. The 50 reis coin is also very similar, but a tad smaller than the 100 reis coin.

Do you see the black spot on the 100 reis side of the coin in the picture? That would be considered damage by coin collectors and would necessarily lower the coin's value to them. The only thing that would be worse is if someone tried to clean the coin and remove the spot. That would be Major Damage.

Collecting lesson over, your 1871 100 reis coin catalogs for about $10 US dollars in almost uncirculated condition, and it rises to over $45 in fully uncirculated condition. This is a coin that shows a strong dependency on condition (state of preservation, amount of wear, or 'grade' of the coin).

It takes a trained collector eye to distinquish between almost uncirculated and fully uncirculated condition. If you know a knowledgable collector, take your coin to him or her to find out if your coin qualifies for lofty uncirculated status. You did not specify a holder for your coin on our questionnaire. If there is no holder, the coin is almost uncirculated by definition. Fully uncirculated coins are always in holders.
