Spain Maravedi and 2, 4, and 8 Maravedis 1835 to 1854
Spain Maravedi and 2, 4, and 8 Maravedis 1835 to 1854

You have an 8 Maravedis (8M) coin from Spain, Mels. These coins are quite valuable when in good condition. Most of them that you see are in terrible shape. You claim your coin is heavily worn, so I would suspect the catalog value to be about $10 to $20 US dollars. But the price goes up quickly with condition.

These coins were minted in 1, 2, 4, and 8 maravedis denominations, as indicated by their size and by the annotation 1M, 2M, 4M, and 8M on the side with Queen Isabel's portrait. The listings below call out values for all denominations.

Look at the coin in the picture. It is dark in color, but it is in very good shape when it comes to wear. Further, there is no damage in the form of scratches and spots. As such, the 8M coin in the picture is quite valuable, probably $300 or more.

These are catalog values and, as such, are inflated over actual retail and wholesale prices. For an explanation of the ins and outs of catalog value, please see our Important Terminology page (link at upper left).

If you have a 1, 2, 4, or 8 maravedis in good condition with pleasing eye appeal, it is best to seek out a knowledgable coin dealer or coin collector. There are several subtle varitations (including mint marks and other features) that can cause the value to increase substantially. Such minor variations are beyond the scope of CoinQuest, but you'd best check for yourself to be sure.

The monetary system of early Spain is interesting. There are 34 maravedi in one real, and there are 16 reales in one escudo. A popular silver coin was the 8 reales piece, and this is the famed 'piece of 8' in stories of early America.
