1975 new pence and a 1997 two pence are these equivalent to the british penny?
It's confusing, I know. First, 'penny' and 'pence' mean the same thing, but 'penny' is singular and 'pence' is plural. So you can have 1 penny and you can have 2 pence, but you cannot have 1 pence. Now that's not all. The UK went decimal in their coinage. The date 15 February 1971 is known as Decimal Day, when the United Kingdom and Ireland decimalised their currencies. Before decimal, there were 240 pence in a pound, with 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound. Other coinage, such a farthings (one-quarter penny), crowns (5 shillings), and groat (4 pence), added to the confusion. After Decimal Day there are 100 pence in a pound, again with 'penny' the singular form and 'pence' the plural. For 10 years, from 1971 to 1981, the annotation new penny was used to make sure everyone knew that the old penny had been replaced with a new penny. -- So the answer to your question is 'no.' A 1975 new penny coin carries the value of one post-decimalization penny. A 1997 two pence coin carries the value of two post-decimalization pennies. - CoinQuest (Paul)
