Malaysia Straits Settlements 1/2 and 1 Cent 1919 to 1932
Malaysia Straits Settlements 1/2 and 1 Cent 1919 to 1932

Well that's cool. A square coin. Your coin is from the Straits Settlements, now known as West Malaysia, with its major city Singapore, on the Malay Peninsula of Asia. The name was changed to Malaya in 1939.

Great Britain issued coinage for the Straits starting in 1845 and continuing until 1935. The only square issues are the 1/2 and 1 cent coins of King George V bear inscriptions:

1/2 CENT: George V King Emperor
1 CENT: George V King and Emperor of India

Here is what the catalogs say about them:

1/2 CENT
worn: $5 US dollars catalog value
average circulated: $9
well preserved: $24
fully uncirculated: $40

worn: $2 US dollars catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $18
fully uncirculated: $56

All dates carry roughly the same value. Our figures above are inflated catalog values. You can learn how to convert from catalog values to actual values at our Important Terminology page (link at upper left).

I have a square 5 cent Malaysia Straits Settlement coin. It says only 1/2 & 1 cent square coins were made. What do I have? - Herb Canell
I'm not sure, Herb. Perhaps you have an error coin stamped on a square blank meant to become a 5 cent from Ceylon - those are square. I double-checked the catalogs and there are five different issues of 5 cents from the Straits Settlements, all of which are round. If you would like, you are very welcome to use the Contact link on the main page of CoinQuest to start an email exchange with us. We can then work further together on finding out exactly what you have! - CoinQuest (Chris)

I have a very similar coin with the exception of it saying GEORGE V KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA. It is a 1 cent Straits Settlement 1920. - Gretchen
The legends are different on the 1/2 and 1 cent. We made the page more clear. Also, the values of these coins have gone up since we first created this page, so the new values are now shown here. Thanks, Gretchen, for writing. - CoinQuest (Paul)
