Austria 1/2, 5/10, 1, and 2 Kreuzer 1851 to 1881 'Scheidemunze' means, approximately, a small amount of money, and 'Oesterreich' means Austria. So David has a 1 kreuzer coin from Austria. There are 100 kreuzer in a gulden, these coins were minted with similar patterns in 1/2, 5/10, 1, and 2 kreuzer denominations.

Most of these coins you see are pretty well worn out. In circulated condition the 1 kreuzer catalog value runs around $5 to $10 US dollars, less if badly worn. Catalog value is an inflated value and you can use our Important Terminology page to understand the difference between catalog value and actual value.

Now the coin in our picture is different. It is in beautiful shape, with almost no wear and an attractive and colorful patina. Collectors will pay more for such a nice coin. After all, they want coins that look good in their collections.

The coin picture comes from Münzhandel Andreas Fenzl in Göttingen, Germany, and CoinQuest thanks them for use of their coin photo. You can see this coin for sale at this link where the selling price is 95 euros, about $120 US dollars. So you see good looks in a coin is worth a lot.

Here are approximate catalog values for coins in average circulated condition:

1/2 kreuzer: $5
5/10 kreuzer: $10
1 kreuzer: $5
2 kreuzer: $12

There are some better date coins in these series. Most dates are worth the amounts cited above, but if you have one of these dates and mint marks, you can expect catalog values around the number shown for an average circulated coin.

1/2 KREUZER
1851C: $200

5/10 KREUZER
1858E: $60
1859E: $50
1859V: $50

1864V: $50
