German States Wurttemberg 2 and 5 Mark 1874 to 1888 | 2 5 mark wurttemberg crown zwei funf eagle coat man hawk falcon shield king reich koenig gott von markt deuchmark These are grand old coins -- coins from the individual German States after the Empire was organized in 1871. The old coin from the German State of Wurttemberg are quite valuable if they are in good shape. The zwei (2) and funf (5) mark coins bear the likeness of King Charles (Karl). Here is what the catalogs say about these two series:

ZWEI (2) MARK (28 mm diameter, 0.322 troy ounces silver)
worn (like our picture): $20 US dollars catalog value
average circulated: $30
well preserved: $80
fully uncirculated: $250

FUNF (5) MARK (37 mm diameter, 0.804 troy ounces silver)
worn (like our picture): $20 US dollars catalog value
average circulated: $60
well preserved: $150
fully uncirculated: $1000
5 mark dated 1894F are rare and catalog at $400 in average circulated condition

You can see that the amount of wear makes all the difference with these coins. Remember that catalog values apply only to coins without problems. Scratches, stains, spots, and cleanings are considered damage by coin collectors, and the values go way down. For instance, the coin in our picture has wear equivalent to an average circulated coin. But there is a severe stain on the back top. This lowers value to about the same as a worn coin. But, watch out! If someone tried to clean the coin to make it look nicer, collectors would shun the coin and its value would be zero!

Also remember these are catalog values; actual values will be lower. See our Important Terminology page for an explanation.
