Belgium 1 and 5 Francs 1938 to 1940
Hi Brian -- These coins with the majestic lion and three shield design were minted only briefly from 1938 to 1940. The one franc coin is low value, but the 5 franc with the same design is somewhat difficult to find and is worth more.
Now, here is a little tidbit to get your collector juices flowing. Some 5 franc coins have a small star on the edge of the coin, along with other letters. Most of them have a small crown instead of a star. Get our your magnifier! If you see a star, your 5 franc is a valuable coin. The catalogs go as high as $1000 for a starred coin dated 1939 in average circulated condition, much less for coins dated 1938. If you think you might have one, consult a knowledgeable collector or a reputable coin dealer. There is a good discussion thread on this topic over at CoinCommunity.com.
