Belgium 1 and 5 Francs 1938 to 1940
Belgium 1 and 5 Francs 1938 to 1940

Hi Brian -- These coins with the majestic lion and three shield design were minted only briefly from 1938 to 1940. The one franc coin is low value, but the 5 franc with the same design is somewhat difficult to find and is worth more.

Our listings below give approximate catalog values for these coins. Use our Important Terminology page to properly interpret these values.

worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $3

5 FRANCS (see below)
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1
well preserved: $3
fully uncirculated: $8

Now, here is a little tidbit to get your collector juices flowing. Some 5 franc coins have a small star on the edge of the coin, along with other letters. Most of them have a small crown instead of a star. Get our your magnifier! If you see a star, your 5 franc is a valuable coin. The catalogs go as high as $1000 for a starred coin dated 1939 in average circulated condition, much less for coins dated 1938. If you think you might have one, consult a knowledgeable collector or a reputable coin dealer. There is a good discussion thread on this topic over at
