Brazil 20 Reis 1889 to 1912
If your coin looks like the one in our picture (yikes!), it is worth essentially zero. The stains and damage is so bad on this coin, all but a few fringe collectors would consider it.
Catalog value for your coin with no problems like scratches and stains would be about 5 US dollars. In better condition, the value goes up to $10. Since you indicate scratches and steel wool, your coin will be joining our friend in the picture -- essentially worthless.
Sorry, Chrisgo, about the bad news on your coin's value. But I want to thank you for your excellent description of the coin. It makes our job much easier.
Many other coins in this series parallel Chrisgo's coin. There are a few 'better dates' as follows:
1896 (the best date in the series)
1909 (second best date of the series)
These catalog for $5 in worn condition and rise to $50 in fully uncirculated. Double these values for the 1896 and 1909 dates.
By the way, I once had a collector as a customer who eagerly sought out coins with problems (like the one in the picture). He asked me explicitly, all the time, 'Got any problem coins?' One thing is for sure, this specialty collector bought all his coins at bargain basement levels!
